I wish I could use the latest "stable" drivers (that is 9629). Unfortunately
these drivers are plagued with a nasty bug that causes segfault to NV2x GPUs
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=79792
I'll try the previous release drivers and will report back. I will also try it
on my radeon 9000Pro with open source drivers and see if it works there. If it
does work, then you can safely mark this bug report as "resolved"

Please download and install last stable drivers instead. With stable drivers
I have working 3DMark2000 and 3DMark2001SE under both GeForce 4600 Ti and
GeForce 7600. In fact nvidia beta drivers often cause problems so it is really
good idea to use stable ones instead.

actually, what makes it launch successfully is launching it from within it's
installed directory. I used to call it using a path instead, which obviously was
the reason why it couldn't find the files it was looking for. Nevertheless, the
windowed mode is a useful tip.

ah! that did work indeed (sort of). At least the application starts
I don't get any "driver" related error messages during installation (see
attachment). Using your suggested of launching the application does indeed work,
though the tests show a black screen. I see the intro pages before each test,
but the tests don't show up. The CPU runs at full (which suggest it's doing
something)
just for the record I have an NVIDIA NV28 (GeForce Go 4200 Ti) using the 9625
beta drivers. Direct rendering is enabled and 3D acceleration works fine.
anyway, your method is at least a start. Any further tips would be nice.
thanks

Alright, I tried installing firefox version 1.5.0.8, the installer works, aside
from a few graphical glitches.
I'm getting the same error when running firefox however ... (using wine 0.9.18)

3DMark2001se works for me. What version of drivers and and what videocard you
have? Also errors about drivers appears typicaly if 3DMark2001se wasn't
correctly installed. For example if I try to run it without installing first it
will give me error about lack of drivers. It can give different errors actually
in different environment (for example, different versions of 3DMark, different
Wine versions, different problems with installation, etc. can affect this). But
in all cases word "drivers" is common for all such errors. Of course it doesn't
mean that your installation is incorrect but it is good idea to reinstall to
fresh .wine directory.
Backup and remove your ~/.wine and try reinstalling into fresh .wine directory.
Go to folder with 3DMark2001se executable and try to start it like this:
wine explorer /desktop=3DMark2001SE,1280x1024 3DMark2001SE.exe
It should work. At least for me it works. Only thing that doesn't work is its
Demo.
