I added a d: drive for the cdrom. That's the only change in order to install
hitman. It still doesn't work, I'm not the only one with this problem as someone
else noted it on the appdb for hitman.

Hi Rob, the installer gets a bit further with current git, but now it pops out
with a messagebox: Object Reference not set: Error Number 0x80040706. Looks like
bug 922.

Ok, I've tested l166.exe on windows a lot and I have to say that the bug is in
the application not in wine. Of course there are differences between windows
and wine regarding circumstances the problem occures in. But, no doubt, the
problem is definitely there also in windows.

Actually, I meant that it should already work.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ole32="" wine foo.exe
which is the same as:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ole32= wine foo.exe
Does that not work for you?

Older Wine that used Mozilla ActiveX control doesn't run either.

Maybe WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ole32=d
by analogy with currently supported and documented "n" and "b"
I'm not sure what the syntax should be for binary-only and native-only. Maybe
"N" and "B"?

Make sure you didn't not alter your Wine configuration in any way.
err:menubuilder:InvokeShellLinker failed to fork and exec wineshelllink
most of the times mean that you removed z: drive or have altered default
directory locations. Please remove ~/.wine dir and try again without _any_
additional changes.

As is well know, many MSWin applications make annoying use of the system tray.
I'd love there to be an option (maybe in winecfg?) for having the system tray
miniwindow ignore certain applications, or even maybe to be completely
disabled/hidden for a given wineserver.
