I just downloaded a fresh copy of visual c++ express 2005's downloader from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/3/a/83aad8f9-38ba-4503-b3cd-ba28c3…
It can't download anything; seems to give up before even trying BITS?
I haven't verified that setup works on windows anymore, fwiw.

I'm not sure how to change the version. What do you mean by earliest known
version? Do you mean we should download every version of Wine until we find one
where it works. What if it doesn't work on any of them?

Even if we did mark this bug as targeted at release 1.2,
that's no assurance that it would be fixed for that release.
Has the test case from #28 been committed? I looked, but it's kind of hard to
tell.

In the hopes of staving off the number of emails this conversation is
generating(!) could I suggest as a resolution that rather than posting comments
in Bugzilla (which is no doubt irritating the developers), that somebody here
contacts a lead member of the Wine dev team directly, and asks them if The Sims
2 can be a criteria for the next main release of Wine, just as working
Photoshop support was for Wine 1.0?
I suspect there's actually an awful lot of us Linux geeks who are held back
from installing Linux on home computers because wives/girlfriends/sisters play
this game addictively, so I think there's a very persuasive case for how
important it indirectly is.
Bottom line though: I know I'm certainly sick of seeing non-bug related info on
this bug spamming by inbox, and I think everyone posting in here needs to
respect the hard (and voluntary!) work the developers are doing by not filling
this thread with any more chatter.

Last I checked, sims 1 wasn't even running properly, let alone the 2nd one. But
do not despair! I am sure that it will get fixed, eventually... Maybe around
the same time Duke Nukem Forever is released.

With comments like that people are less likely to look. Unless you have
information on how to fix the bug or have been asked a question, there is no
need to post.
If you want to direct resources then you should consider paying someone to fix
this bug under contract, eg CodeWeavers offer commercial support.
