Bug ID: 35749
Summary: Screen update problems on Counter Strike: Global
Offensive
Product: Wine
Version: 1.7.14
Hardware: x86
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

Regression SHA1: 4c4552c5a1910a9d5adf8eccff0ac62d89ffe376
A new regression:
While playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive (other source engine games might
also be affected; did not test yet), it runs fine at first, but if I alt-tab
out of it and back several times, the game starts stuttering a lot and the
*apparent* framerate drops several times.
Even though it looks as if the framerate plummeted, the in-game FPS counter
keeps showing a normal framerate, i.e. there is no framerate drop from the
game's point of view. GPU load also remains the same, too. Thus, this leads to
believe that rendering is still done normally, but Wine doesn't flip / update
the screen properly, leading to stuttering and apparent framerate drop.
After some testing, I found that reverting this patch makes the problem go
away:
commit 4c4552c5a1910a9d5adf8eccff0ac62d89ffe376
Author: Ken Thomases <ken(a)codeweavers.com>
Date: Wed Feb 19 16:14:53 2014 -0600
wined3d: Restore the pixel format of the window whose pixel format was
actually changed.
I also tried it with the patch from bug #35705 - It did not help at all, so it
is possibly a different bug.
Judging from its description, it does not seem that bug #35655 would the same
bug, either.
With the bug triggered, I did not see any errors / warnings / fixmes that were
not present with the bug NOT triggered, even with +d3d on. So, I am not sure
whether posting debug output would be of any use.
Although it in itself is unsupported, to shed more light on the matter, I
should also mention about the behavior of this bug when encountered on Wine
with Stefan Dösinger's CSMT patchset:
Everything is the same, except the game is stuck on showing one frame that was
drawn right before triggering the bug. Which *visually* makes it seem as the
game has hanged. Leaving game like this for longer amounts of time, I can see
that it then flips / updates the screen approximately once every one minute
[leading to 0.016 frames per second, effectively]. Sometimes, after waiting a
minute or two, graphics start updating / working normally again, but that lasts
for fifteen seconds tops and it gets stuck on showing one frame again.

Roller Coaster Tycoon (GoG.com Version) renders very slowly and winds up just
dropping frames.
If launched in 1.7.14, RCT will seem to get stuck on it's license notification
screen. Normally clicking the mouse button will skip to the main menu, but that
does not happen here. Pressing Alt+F4 will close RCT but only after a dialog
comes up, which is delayed.
If RCT is permitted to continue running, it will eventually reach the main
menu, but the main menu is completely useless as it's slow to update and seems
very unresponsive to the user's input.

Terminal output
I compiled 32-bit Wine 1.7.14 in my chroot environment today using the normal
method (./configure ; make depends ; make) to replace 1.7.11. Nothing else was
changed on the system.
Upon launching the game there is now a severe stuttering/microfreezing evident
everywhere except the standalone launcher/patcher included with the game. Login
screen, main menu, all submenus, and gameplay are affected, rendering the game
unplayable. I normally run the game in fullscreen, but windowed mode is also
affected.
What I've done:
Tried disabling graphical detail settings in-game one at a time, no reduction
in settings affected the issue for better or worse.
Created a clean Wine prefix, issue persists.
Compiled 1.7.13 and 1.7.12 to narrow down when the problem began; the issue is
not present in those versions nor any prior versions I've used.
Tested the 1.7.14 Debian Sid packages from carbon-project.org; they exhibit the
same behavior.
Debian Testing 64-bit, Wine 32-bit
AMD Catalyst (fglrx) 14.2 beta driver
Intel i5 3570K, Radeon HD 7950
Installer is located at https://warframe.com/ if anyone else would care to try.
Attached terminal output covers running the launcher, proceeding, and ~5
seconds at the login screen, during which the issue is evident.

When wine was updated to 1.7.14 Splinter Cell: Blacklist became unplayable:
video started to stutter after game lunch. Sometimes stuttering appears in
loading screen after startup but more often when game is loaded.
Bug appears in wine-1.7.14, also presents in 1.7.15.
I did regression test and it shows bad commit:
4c4552c5a1910a9d5adf8eccff0ac62d89ffe376 is the first bad commit

See the MSDN documentation:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms679279%28v=vs.85%…
Currently implemented as a stub, this function would greatly help Python
developers who want to "freeze" (bundle into binaries) and package their
programs for Windows, as Python's internal "freezing" mechanisms (as well as
helpers based on them, such as cx_Freeze or unmaintained -- but still
wide-spread -- py2exe) depend on this function -- see the corresponding bug
report at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3591
I guess that some if not most of the logic required to implement this function
might be readily available from Wine's own DLL loading mechanisms, but being
pretty much of a Wine noob, I have no idea how exactly one would implement
this.
