Installing native msxml3 also acts as a workaround.
Can be reproduced with the demo version.

The dwrite.idl file lacks [out] attributes. I don't know whether your IDL tool
understands that attribute, but it makes are huge difference for my usage with
Microsoft's IDL compiler.
I have added them for you :-) in the attachment.

A log from a run that crashed
A regression has appeared that causes the game Obduction to hang a bit more
than 50% of the time, usually on the opening screen, or during the loading
screen or in-game.
After two minutes, a message will pop up saying the GameThread timed out
waiting for RenderThread, and the game will exit.
There were already errors relating to textures and shaders covered by #52235,
but those errors didn't cause the game to hang. Since this commit, a fairly
large proportion of those preexisting errors have been replaced by these two
errors instead:
0210:err:d3d:wined3d_debug_callback 00007F5A4CB21880: "GL_INVALID_OPERATION in
glIsTextureHandleResidentARB(handle)".
0210:err:d3d:wined3d_debug_callback 00007F5A4CB21880: "GL_INVALID_OPERATION in

transparency making the text difficult to read.
Reverting commit ee7d047dd55a4b2338eb2d64f85b7d984b39812f
on top of wine-9.0-54-g1932c3a2516 fixes the problem for me.
There is no demo version available.
The Steam version is DRM free, you can start Egypt3.exe directly, without Steam
running.
Make sure 32-bit color depth is selected in the <Options> menu (the problem
doesn't occur in 16-bit color/software renderer mode). In the main menu open
<Documentary Database> to see the problem.
Still present in wine-9.0-54-g1932c3a2516.
