Bug ID: 58041
Summary: PlayOnline Viewer: Black screen when running via
winewayland.
Product: Wine
Version: 10.4
Hardware: x86-64
URL: https://web.archive.org/web/20210810150839/http://www.
playonline.com/ff11eu/download/media/install_win.html
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: winewayland
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: chiitoo(a)gentoo.org
Distribution: Gentoo
Running PlayOnline Viewer via Wayland by setting DISPLAY="" in an LXQt/Wayfire
session results into a completely black window.
The application still works, just no content can be seen.
Final Fantasy XI Online, which PlayOnline Viewer is used to launch, seems to
work OK so far, when navigated to blindly.
Did not spot anything different in the default terminal output yet.
Running via XWayland works as expected, though that also means a black screen
in displays other than the primary screen, or rather the content just isn't
updated in the other screens.
Without XWayland, the result is the same regardless of the display.
Thank you!

After 3ae66c75cf4 [1], PlayOnline Viewer sometimes restores from a minimised
state behaving as if it was not the active window.
Normally, when the PlayOnline Viewer window is visible but not the active
window, it will lower its FPS to ~5 and the mouse cursor will not change over
it, nor do the buttons respond to the cursor until the window is activated.
Once it is the active window, the FPS for me will be above 40 depending on what
is on the screen, and the mouse cursor is a custom cursor from the application.
With the mentioned commit, the application window acts as if it is not the
active window, with the reduced FPS and non-custom cursor, but it responds to
clicks on buttons and such as usual when it is the active window.
This does not happen 100% of the time, sometimes taking a handful or
minimise/restore actions.
Thank you!

When Lotus Approach is started from a terminal directory, the welcome screen

$ wine approach
But when Lotus Approach is started as a "virtual Desktop", it does not.
$ cd .wine/drive_c/lotus/approach/
$ wine explorer /desktop approach
From Xfce Launcher:
bash -c "cd $HOME/.wine/drive_c/lotus/approach; wine explorer

If you open a database, then close it, the welcome screen does pop up. I will
attach a video of it.

Created attachment 78901
--> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=78901
WINEDEBUG=+waylanddrv,+ddraw,+wined3d,+opengl,+seh`.
### Summary
Total Annihilation (GOG version and demo) shows a black screen on native
Wayland (Mutter 48.3). On X11 it works perfectly, and on XWayland the game has
a minor fullscreen issue (see Bug 57482).
### Steps to reproduce
1. Download the Total Annihilation demo (or use the GOG version).
GAME DEMO CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM:
https://archive.org/details/TotalAnnihilation_201405
2. Launch the game executable (`TotalA.exe`) under Wine on a native Wayland
session (No XWayland).
### Current behavior
The game process starts, sound can be heard, and keyboard input works (buttons
can be pressed), but the entire game window is black. The window is also not
fullscreen.
### Expected behavior
The game's intro videos should play, followed by the main menu, which should be
visible and interactive.
### Relevant logs, screenshots, screencasts etc.
*Attached are the following files:*
1. `TA.log`: Full Wine debug log captured with
`WINEDEBUG=+waylanddrv,+ddraw,+wined3d,+opengl,+seh`.
2. `system_info.txt`: Output of `inxi -Fxxxza`.
### System Details
- **Wine Version:** Custom build from source (also tested with Wine development
branch, same result)
- **Windowing System:** Mutter 48.3 (Wayland session)
- **Distribution:** Fedora 42
- **Graphics Driver:** Mesa 25.0.7
- **Kernel version:** 6.15.4
