Without modifying directx.c, I couldn't get to the login screen (or, actually, I got to the login screen, and got sound at that step, but the login screen was all black and unusable). After altering the last return in IWineD3DImpl_CheckDeviceType function in directx.c to return D3D_OK instead of D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE (and adding the "Fonts" registry key), I got to the login screen and could proceed to login.
