OK, now I have it working on XP by following the instructions here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20021002185748/http://www.riverdeep.net/support/f...
which say to rename windows/system/winspool.drv 
(NOT windows/system32/winspool.drv) to windows/system/winspool.dll 
XP reinstates the missing .drv, so it would work
just as well to copy rather than rename.

When I get home I'll try the same workaround with Wine...
