I've tried that game but it doesn't seem to start, is there anything that needs
to be installed first?

I tried a couple of other itch.io games tagged as RPG Maker MZ but also not
been able to reproduce the issue.

Which desktop environment are you using? X11 or XWayland? Any IME involved
maybe?
