Objects are always bright, until you break them; flashlight does not work on statics, won't work on props either, but will make them even brighter instead. Changing dxlevel and other configuration options does not have any effect whatsoever.
Also there seems to be a problem with props in general; the game does not render them, but will fade them in when getting closer. Looks like an intentional invisibility effect for slow computers; but the game runs fine in Windows at even higher resolutions (tried 800x600 in Wine, 1024x768 in Windows).
