The next thing to try is probably installing ie6 for real and see if this goes away. Easiest way to do that is either use ies4linux or Codeweavers Crossover.
After installing IE the error seems to remain. Tested on Ubuntu Feisty Desktop. (to mention: IE does work when started through the Shortcut on the Desktop (Gnome).Console "wine iexplore.exe" does not work without setting the WINEPREFIX (?) Environment variable. It results in an empty window. So it may also be related to this issue (white space character in path to IE issue))
