Bug ID: 53573 Summary: Warcraft III Reforged 1.33.0.19194 has black main menu Product: Wine Version: 7.15 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: kolAflash@kolahilft.de Distribution: ---
Created attachment 72950 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=72950 STDOUT/STDERR log when warcraft-iii-reforged-1.33.0.19194 is starting an switching to black main menu
Last night (2022-08-18) Blizzard released an update for Warcraft III Reforged from version 1.32.x to 1.33.0.19194. Since then the main menu of the game is just black! But I can hear the sound of the main menu.
I attached a STDOUT/STDERR log.
Version 1.32.x of the game was running fine using wine-staging-7.14. (didn't test any other wine version before)
Wine versions I just tried: wine-staging-7.14 wine-staging-7.15 wine-devel-7.15
OS: Debian-11 Wine: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ GPU: Radeon RX 590
Neither standard Wine D3D11 OpenGL based implementation (WineD3D) nor DXVK is working.
Maybe slightly related: Warcraft III: staying in menus quickly gobs all system memory https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/1866

--- Comment #1 from kolAflash kolAflash@kolahilft.de --- Update / patch notes by Blizzard:
1.32.11 - 2022-04-01 (I guess that was the last version before 1.33.0.19194) https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/warcraft3/t/warcraft-iii-reforged-patch-13...
1.33.0 - 2022-08-18 https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/warcraft3/t/patch-1330-is-now-available/28...
Lutris forum thread which is probably about that same issue. https://forums.lutris.net/t/warcraft-iii-stuck-on-lion-head-after-new-patch/...
And people in the DXVK issue are having some guesses too. https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/1866#issuecomment-1219933655

--- Comment #2 from kolAflash kolAflash@kolahilft.de --- I got it working again!
See here: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/1866#issuecomment-1220034968 The menu gets back when using some custom patches.
In short: I used wine-tkg and enabled _shared_gpu_resources. https://github.com/Frogging-Family/wine-tkg-git/tree/master/wine-tkg-git I think it's mostly this patch which is needed. https://github.com/Frogging-Family/wine-tkg-git/commit/439d7459f3f977f9d5f21... Also dxvk-1.10.3 is needed.
Hope to see that fix soon in wine-staging :-)

P.S.
It may be needed to additionally set the Windows version to Windows 7 via winecfg. At least for: C:\Program Files (x86)\Warcraft III_retail_\x86_64\BlizzardBrowser\BlizzardBrowser.exe. (Windows 10 may not work)

--- Comment #4 from Le Gluon du Net legluondunet@gmail.com --- Hello,
same problem here: if I launch Warcraft III Reforged obtain only a black screen or a Lion head, but nothing more on my computer with a Nvidia card (drivers 525.60.11).
Set Windows version to Windows 7 changed nothing.
On another computer with a AMD Radeon GPU and Mesa 22.2.4 it works if I set Windows version to 7.
Why Warcraft III reforged works only with Wine set to Windows 7?
It seems to be a problem with Nvidia drivers too.

--- Comment #5 from tect@gmx.net --- I had the same problem. I fixed it by using "wine-ge-proton7-35" as Runner in Bottles and Windows 7 environment. I am on arch and have a AMD GPU. Just switching to Windows 7 was not enough.

I have the same problem with wine 10.4 both with and without dxvk.
The game plays music, mangohud overlay is displayed but there is no menu, just black screen. WorldEdit works and can launch maps but if you try to open the menu, it doesn't appear.
The log in attachment contains lines that appear when the game is launched with DXVK.
