wine log of starcraft not working

With 1.0-rc4, when the 'Emulate a virtual desktop' setting in winecfg is
disabled, Starcraft is unable to connect to Battle.net for multiplayer, and
gives an error that reads: "Battle.net was unable to properly identify your
application version."  The same feature works correctly when the virtual
desktop is enabled.

The most recent two comments in the AppDB entry (linked in URL field) for
Starcraft have the same symptoms.

This only seems to happen when Compiz is running; if I switch to Metacity it
works correctly in either mode.  I use RenderTargetLockMode=readtex so I didn't
notice this until commit e1c60caa42a made it usable with Compiz.

Which debug channel(s) should I be looking at for clues?  Any other relevant
information I can post?

Invalid then. Compiz conflicts with wine over graphics resources. File a bug
with Compiz.

I'm using wine 1.1, using metacity window manager NOT COMPIZ, and checked
emulated a virtual desktop (tried 800x600 and 1280x1024 resolutions) and I
still get the "Battle.net was unable to properly identify your application
version" error.  Single player works perfectly fine it's just when I try to go
on battle.net I get the error.

I'm running warcraft2 Battle.net edition, using metacity and I get the same
error when running both with and without a virtual desktop.

The current status of this bug is CLOSED. Since it also happens without Compiz,
can someone with the appropriate bugzilla rights change to OPEN again?

I think a new bug should be opened for this issue, as it is different from mine
in two important ways (appears even without Compiz, and appears whether or not
a virtual desktop is used).  My issue was, as far as I can tell, caused by
Compiz alone.
