2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Downloaded latest version of Steam YESTERDAY (1/19/09) from
www.steampowered.com and used it to download and update the latest release of
TF2 from my orangebox purchase.

The game launches from steam properly (after some tweaking) and i can see all
the main menu options, click and do.

However, when i "find servers" and choose a server to connect to, after I get
the familiar loading screen as all content is downloaded locally for the
server, it gets about 2/3 done loading and crashes. (TF2 not steam) with a pop
up error window saying:

Engine Error

CAudioSourceMemWave (***************.wav); GetDataPointer() failed.

where **.wav is any random directory and _.wav depending on which map is
trying to load. I tried it about 6 times and each time it was a different file
in a different location. The files are present in those locations however.

Also, after clicking "OK" on the error, clicking on my gnome system bar makes
it disappear, flash, both or crash the PC. depends how he gods of wine feel
that day.

I was unable to "Disable audio" in any manor that solved this.

I did add the following "registry" entires after the initial install per the
following thread:

and I reduced all the graphical options to minimum per suggestions in
debugging. This looks very much like a sound issue, so here's my sound config:

In my wineconf I have ALSA and OSS active and seem to have no other problem
with other applications (have WoW, Digsby, Ventrilo installed currently) except
some mic issues with vent.

Since steam is loaded from an icon in my wine menu that I added there is no
command window ouput. And at the moment I cant do anything else because my PC
is crashing as a result of all this....(which is why I chose "critical" status)

Looks like hardware / driver issues.

Can you try in offline mode? Just create server. Does it work that way for you?

trying to create a local server game (offline) produces the same results.

I don't suspect an Audo/hardware problem because all my other audio
applications work perfectly except Ventrilo and only the mic is affected.

when I load tf2 all the music works fine, sound effects work fine. I even had
Pandora.com running in the background without any issues on one of the
attempts. Dealt with mashing both sets of audio no problem.

I'm seeing this too, although only the TF2 crash, not the system crash. Wine
version is 1.1.15~winehq0~ubuntu~8.04-0ubuntu2, nvidia is 180.22.

I'm getting the same problem.  It started happening shortly after the Scout
Update.  I was able to connect once to a server for a play session.  The next
time I started the game, I started crashing out with the CAudioSourceMemWave
errors.

I cannot reproduce this error in either HL2: Episode 1 or Left 4 Dead.

I also tried doing a "Verify integrity of game cache", but to no effect.

I have the same problem. If you disable sound in winecfg or turn it to
Emulation mode with driver emulation off it seems to work...

Same problem here:

- Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit
- Nvidia geforce 8800GT 512MB
- Driver Versions:  180.44, 180.41, 180.37

- Tried with Wine 1.01 and also Codeweaver's crossover games (has been reported
to them as well)

- Tried a fresh install of game and OS, no change

- Tried changing different audio settings in winecfg, either audio doesn't
work, or game crashes.

- CS: Source works fine

Note:  Music does play in the load screen, its only while connecting to a
server (or hosting your own) that it crashes with the mentioned error

It has something to do with the audio. Disable audio in wine-cfg (uncheck), and
you can load the map correctly. If you enable audio for steam while playing
TF2, it crashes while changing map.

Go to your voice options and unclick the 'boost microphone'
go to servers and connect. Your in-game sound should work. You will have to do
this everytime you start TF2, for some odd reason this option does not save. In
fact, if your try to edit out the microphone settings in the config.cfg it will
not fix the problem. Unchecking that box before starting a game seems to work
if you join a server; it does not work if you try to start your own server.
It's an extremely temperamental bug but this works well and you don't have to
remove pulse audio to do it."

This bug is still present in wine 1.2-rc4. Seems to turn up every time there's
an update to TF2 so I suspect something to do with caches rebuilding is the
problem. 
Can run snd_rebuildaudiocaches with audio disabled without troubles, as soon as
audio is turned on it fails though.
