There have actually been multiple issues (I think at least 3 or 4, at least one of which also existed on some windows versions) in the past that have prevented wa from starting properly, and unfortunately that bug applies to all of them. The current problem is that when you start wa, you cannot see the menus; that is what the hacked ddraw.dll is meant to work around; problems with this work-around are not problems in wine.
Please remove the hacked ddraw.dll. If it still crashes, you're seeing another issue. If it runs but fails to draw the frontend, it's bug 4009.
