Starting a Linux application from a Windows application

Hello list, we have a Windows application "App1" which starts another application "App2" using CreateProcessA, then doing some different work, and finally waiting for "App2" to finish using WaitForSingleObject. It is important for "App1" to catch the exit code of "App2" as well as "App2's" messages on stdout. This works fine with Windows applications. Unfortunately, this does not work as soon as "App2" is a Linux application; "App1" seems to wait forever. Looking at the code of process.c and sync.c in kernel32, it seems to me that wine forgets everything about the Linux process once it is started. Is there a patch to solve the problem? Currently, we are using wine-0.9.20. Thanks in advance, Helmar

When to use SUBLANG_NEUTRAL

As I wrote I've found that there is a mess in wine with the usage of SUBLANG_NEUTRAL and SUBLANG_DEFAULT. I tried to understand when to use which and wrote a wiki page about it: http://wiki.winehq.org/SublangNeutral . It contains some generic information about it but I thought that it would be best to have also a list of languages for each case. I've took the wine languages list and sorted the obvious cases. There are however 7 languages which have many sublangs and I don't know if they should have one generic translation or be translated into each sublang. If someone knowing one of these languages could Cut&Paste the language from the "undecided" list to one of the lists, I think it would help. Mikolaj Zalewski

Execution Trace of Application in Wine

Hi I am trying to dynamically monitor an application in Wine. Specifically I would like to know if there is some sort of 'ptrace' like API which will allow me to attach to a windows executable single step through the program and obtain the contents of the registers and the instruction pointer as the single stepping proceeds. I know I could manually single step via winedbg but I would like to automate this process. Thanks for your help Sujata

That is _really_ annoying, but nobody seems to know what it causes. So, I once again started to investigate it. The culprit is the 'update_key_state' function in mouse.c, which modifies the global 'key_state_table' without telling the application that the keystate has changed. A patch that was submitted long ago to the wine-patches mailing list changed the code in the above mentioned function to call 'KEYBOARD_ChangeOneState', which takes care of informing the application of the keystate change (but only if the keystate has actually changed). AJ rejected the patch, don't know the exact reason but it was more or less because it didn't seem the proper fix for him. I watched how/when 'update_key_state' is called and one place is in 'X11DRV_EnterNotify' (which for some reason is also in mouse.c). The problems is that KeymapNotify is sent after EnterNotify and because 'update_key_state' modifies the global keystate table (at EnterNotify), 'KEYBOARD_ChangeOneState' (called by 'X11DRV_KeymapNotify') doesn't inform the application about the changed keystate. The question now is, is the WM allowed to dispatch EnterNotify before KeymapNotify? I couldn't find any definitive answer, but I've found one book where this order is explicitly mentioned and one PDF where it's less clear, but from my understanding also leads to this conclusion. I'm starting to see that unless we whine and complain in Bugzilla that nothing gets done on this issue. So I'm comming on to the wine developers group to complain. This is a bug that is long and contentious. Its preventing a large number of perfectly good apps to be used. Wonder when if ever you people plan on working on it. I had the same experience. It seems that you can't do a synchronous call of a linux process from a windows one. My solution was to create a DLL interface that implements a function called "linux_command". On Windows it is stubbed out, but in Linux it a system() type call. App1 can link against it in Windows, but do nothing. When you link against it at runtime in Wine, you can do the linux command. Then I run an async bash command, capture the pid, and check for it later. This, after long hours of attempts and dead ends.
