I recently bought a 10,000 RPM Western Digital 150GB SATA, 16MB cache drive and
formatted it JFS as my old IDE /home disk was running out of space
Due to the speed of this new disk, this startup issue has now completely
stopped. It just works every time

@ Anastasius Focht:
Please note that the trick with the file "l_intl.nls" is not working in all
situations. I assume you are using the win2000 emulation as standard.
When using xp, this file is neither helping not hurting.
Please also note that the last GIT is also broken as to regards a memory leak.
A memory leak solved at 0.9.49 reappeared in other places in the last GIT. I
would then not assume that it is the best basis for testing. Maybe it's best
waiting for the next stable version.

verified!
using the good winex11.drv.so fixes the problem of not being able to run the
application.
Now it's just a matter of determining what went wrong building this file.
My guess is that there was some problem in configure script (since it's harder
to believe that same version of gcc would build very different binaries while
tuning the code to generic CPUs). I could be way off base, though - feel free
to jump in any time ;)

oops, erroneous status change - sorry about that.
More information:
I copied over /usr/local/lib/wine from working system to non-working, and now
it works.
Here's the summary of differences (all other files are binary equal in that
directory):
explorer.exe.so: significant differences
libdinput.def.a: 1 line difference, looks like a different address entry point
to another library. These show up as human-readable integers. From here on
called just "minor difference"
libdxerr8.a: minor difference
libdxerr9.a: minor difference
libdxguid.a: several minor differences
libstrmiids.a: minor difference
libuuid.a: minor difference
libwinecrt0.a: several minor differences
mshtml.tlb.so: minor difference
msi.dll.so: 3 bytes differ from another file. Unlike the entry point
difference, this is actual binary data difference.
msxml3.dll.so: large number of differences, but only ~10 of the entire file are
actually different. Differences are in binary data
shdocvw.dll.so: small binary difference
stdole2.tlb.so: small binary difference
stdole32.tlb.so: small binary difference
wineesd.drv.so: significant differences
winex11.drv.so: significant differences <- guessing this is where the problem
appeared since X11DRV was mentioned in the error message. will check by
restoring all bad files except this one
Also, the non-working version doesn't have directory
/usr/local/share/wine/fonts
What could cause such discrepancies when building/installing wine?

update:
tried on another Fedora 8 machine (wine set up the same way as previous
comment) - and it DOES NOT WORK!
The only clue is that when it doesn't work, it prints out an extra error
message in stdout:
fixme:wintab32:X11DRV_WTInfoW Return proper size
The architectures of the two machines differ significantly (one is HP ze4xxx
series laptop - another is a Dell E1505 laptop), though I don't see how that
should make a difference.
Another fairly big difference is that the working one is running fglrx (ATI
binary display driver), and the other one uses x11 radeon driver.
Now that there's a working + nonworking versions, I'll try to trace where the
error comes from.. though of course I appreciate any and all help from wine
maintainers :)

Should be easy to fix. Might be the source of number of GUI issues.

This is won't fix. Wine can not change what it can not change. X does not
support on-the-fly BPP changes.

Should really be fixed for 1.0. Wine needs to talk to WMs, regardless of how WM
specific that might be.
