Summary: America's Army locks up when/after checking for updates
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-net
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: sheeettin(a)gmail.com
Upon running "wine ./ArmyOps.exe", it comes up fine, and works until it says
"Checking for updates...". Sometimes, it will change to say that it's completed,
but it will always lock up at this point. Going into the main menu, etc. does
not help.

Then your bug has nothing to do with this one. This one is fixed. Your problem
is regressions in dsound that causing a slowdown _OR_ the more correct drawing
at expense of the performance. Both are handled under separate bugs.

This is not support forum. If you need any explanation why something have to be
done one way or the other - ask on wine-users ML, read user documentation, check
FAQ. This is place to talk about bugs _only_. If you incapable of following the
requests to run the program in the way we asking you to, then don't bother
reporting bugs, as they won't be looked at.

What Wine version? Run 'wine --version' if you can't get it any other way.

I did read that and your question on why you can't run root, and it prompted my
question and I ask again, why can't you just run as non-root?
You haven't shown anything. No crash report, nothing pointing out a memory leak.
Your report won't accomplish anything.

Tell me, can you read?
"I did this, logged in as non-root, and now the framerate is unbearably low, as I
said happens in dX mode."
Also, my other user account is "privileged", and can therefore also do
*everything*, the only differences I see are root being allowed to use pids
under 1024 and root being allowed to edit system files.
Would you stop patronising me, please?
also:
" but running normal programs as root
is one the main reasons that spyware proliferates on windows machines."
I'm not on a windows machine, and when I was I had no problems with spyware.
Don't talk to me about security, I've been a systems administrator for 5 years
and never once had any trouble with malware of any kind. I've not even had a
successful hack attempt go past me.
I -have- run it as a non-root user, and a different problem appears. I don't
see why, though, as I am using the same home directory for the root user, so the
same ~/.wine files are being used.
All I can see is a memory leak, causing a bigger problem for the root account,
possibly because it's allowing wine more RAM?
I think your attitudes are rather poor about this. I am a user submitting a
-bug-, who cares what exactly is wrong, this is wine's fault and it did work
before the latest wine version and I'm not an idiot!

You really should try to upgrade first to 0.9.41. If this doesn't help you may want to try old WINE version which has worked for you. Even if you don't remember exact version try to remember when you have used it and it worked for you. For example 0.9.30 was released at 2007-01-25, 0.9.32 at 2007-03-02 and so on. You can download both new and old WINE versions from http://www.winehq.org website.

Sorry. I was wrong about DXDiag not having implementation for dxVersion. DXDiag
actually should return correct properties (they are declared dlls/dxdiagn/
provider.c) for DirectX.
