Essentially it's a matter of the BYOND DreamSeeker application expecting OleCreateStaticFromData to always provide it with good data (I think it's dealing with PNG data in this instance). The BYOND people placed error handling code into build 429.999, to allow the DreamSeeker application to gracefully fall back when OleCreateStaticFromData doesn't return S_OK. It is the same thing for Half-Life Episode 2 and maybe some other games. If you launch the game under Steam or if Steam was already open,the bug don't appear.
