Summary: winedbg causes Unhandled page fault on read access
during stepi
Product: Wine
Version: 1.3.4
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: winedbg
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: andrew.pub(a)sophistasis.com
Created an attachment (id=31191)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=31191)
A step by step show of how the error is gotten w/ edited terminal output
session
During a debug of a set of 3rd party DLL's combined with a program, calls to
memory pages which need to be ?swapped in? will cause an Unhandled page fault
when stepi is used, *but* will run properly if that code segment is executed
seamlessly. Essentially, the debugger is interfering with the page swapping
algorithms intermittently making debugging nearly impossible.
The test program is ebook_msc.exe found here:
http://projects.mobileread.com/reader/users/porkupan/PRS900/flash%20package…
In the attachment, a short step by step view of how to re-create the bug is
given including my comments (!)
The backtrace often shows the error point in ntdll.

Still broken with wine 1.3.4.
Native dplay removes the crash but still doesn't work (claims it can't create a
socket).

The dbghelp problem is gone in 1.3.4 (even without native dbghelp).
It still crashes on startup unless the right version of the NoDVD patch is
installed (exception c0000005 is the typical error there), but that's no longer
related to dbghelp and probably shouldn't even be a bug on its own (I think
there's a meta-bug for Tages copy protection not working)

I think that dardack would have to submit it, reveal his identity and
demonstrate that he has no affiliation with Microsoft. Otherwise, I am not sure
that the WINE project's requirements would allow WINE's developers to even look
at it.

Please download the patch and attach it to this bug report, so that the wine
developers might see it.

So this is abandoned if nobody has this installer to test.

One more thing to note is that despite what everyone is saying, it appears to
happen much more often on ATI. When I switched from an NVIDIA Geforce 8800GTS
to an ATI Radeon HD 5770, Counter Strike Source immediately began crashing at
random(when it never did on NVIDIA). I had not updated or otherwise changed
versions of wine after installing the new card.
