Summary: GTA: San Andreas - Ambient Sounds are too quiet (EAX)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.2
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: directx-dsound
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ch.nolte(a)noltec.org
In GTA San Andreas which uses EAX the ambient sound (e.g. from cars etc.) is
too quiet in respect to other sounds in the game (e.g. dialog in cut-scenes).
GTASA has no option to disable EAX.
This problem can be solved for this game, when the "normal" processing mode
within dsound.dll is disabled. This can only be done via code (patch is going
to be attached). This is only a workaround which disables dsound3d completely.
I suppose that there are problems in the distance calculation algorithm in
dsound/sound3d.c and possibly in combination with apps using EAX.
BTW: Replacing eax.dll with other dlls from the web does not work. Also, please
see the comments in appdb:

Just installed the demo in Windows XP using a VirtualBox. There are animated
menus also in the demo.

The ntdll tests all failed, and so they had to be excluded while running wine.
This was done by means of the command prompt.

screenshot showing the problem
I've been using DVD Profiler with Wine for a long time. With wine 1.6.2 in
Ubuntu 14.04, it now comes up with black squares instead of some of the gui
elements. This worked fine in Wine 1.4.x.
Minimizing and restoring the window forces the black squares to redraw.
This is with intel graphics and DVD Profiler 3.8.2.
See downstream bug report:

See the attached screenshot.

Backtrace of program crash
This is an obscure one:
My father recently switched to a Mac, and wanted his old Christmas Lights
program back on his desktop. I thought Wine would run it, however we
experienced a crash. Backtrace attached.
Desktop output is simply "wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to
0x00000000 at address 0x0 (thread 002e), starting debugger..." which doesn't
really help.

Yes, I know that's a lot of work and may not be feasible. But it needs to be
considered.
Ordinary users depend on binary packages, and without real Wine packages
available, are forced to use third party versions that do provide them, whether
they want to or not. Debian never provided them reliably, Fedora stopped last
year, and this year Ubuntu has relegated Wine package-building to every few
months. That's the majority of our users.
