Bug ID: 56166
Summary: GDI performance regression after switching fonts to
syscall interface
Product: Wine
Version: 8.9
Hardware: x86-64
URL: https://developer.download.nvidia.com/SDK/9.5/Samples/
3dgraphics_samples.html#HLSL_HDR_FP16x2
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: win32u
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: mirh(a)protonmail.ch
Regression SHA1: 9b5c916e4e8b90da795be93d8203743d76d22edb
Distribution: ---
Long story short, up to wine 8.8 you get about 2300fps with my 2080 and 9600K
in an old nvidia showcase. After that, it's more like 2150.
Of course it's just a little 7% difference, but it's completely reproducible,
so..
p.s. DXVK and the patch for bug 32323 are also needed to "unlock full speed"
(the sources clearly show a D3DXCreateFont call for Arial, but is it expected
to take a 40% framerate hit without the fonts otherwise?)

After most matches, like missions and deathmatch and in multiplayer games in
the 3rd game, the game doesn't respond to mouse input and I only get beeps when
I click on the window. This does't happen in multiplayer games whenever the
final result 2-0 or 1-0.
I get no stange message in the terminal.

Summary: winewayland unconditionally sends RCtrl when pressing
RAlt
Product: Wine
Version: 10.13
Hardware: x86-64
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: winewayland

In dlls/winewayland.drv/wayland_keyboard.c, at line 831 (as of 10.13 sources),
there is an unconditional Right Control forced when pressing the Right Alt key,
regardless of keyboard layout, shown here:
/* NOTE: Windows normally sends VK_CONTROL + VK_MENU only if the layout has
KLLF_ALTGR */
if (key == KEY_RIGHTALT) send_right_control(hwnd, state);
This interferes with "us" keyboard layouts and programs that treat left and
right alt keys independently. This differs from XWayland where a R_ALT keypress
is sent through unmodified for the "us" layout.
The line in question has a comment mentioning that this should only happen when
KLLF_ALTGR is specified. There are layouts with that specified, but this check
does not factor that in when deciding to send R_CTRL.

While the bug is still alive in 2025, it seems, that the situation actually got
a lot better. I'm not sure, what changed (maybe Wayland changed rules a bit?),
but I've got both Diablo 1.0 and Worms World Party 1.01 working almost with no
issues using stable Wine 10.0 without any big hacks.
In the default fullscreen mode both games still only render black screen, but
after enabling Wine's virtual desktop both games are usable in windowed mode.
You can then use Valve's Gamescope to upscale them from the windowed mode to
fullscreen and you even get flawless Alt+TAB behavior. This way you can also
use AMD's FSR for upscaling, apply CRT shader or use integer scaling, if
needed.
In Diablo the menus are only re-drawn on mouse move, but that is possibly a
different bug. In Worms it seems that the menu is running faster than it should
(clouds in the background are fast), but the rest seems to be fine.
Testing specs:
AMD Ryzen APU (780M)
KDE neon, Plasma 6.5, Wayland
Wine 10.0 installed from Flatpak (using Xwayland)
Enabled virtual desktop in winecfg
