There's no fake dll for winspool.drv in wine,
and 'touch winspool.dll' doesn't help :-(
Maybe I should try making a winspool.dll that
forwards to winspool.drv.

The log has the following lines in it that indicate roughly where the error is
coming from:
trace:ole:_invoke Calling 0x414f93(b7d04828,00000000,)
trace:ole:WINE_StringFromCLSID 0xb7d04ab5->{821DABD6-26F2-49E5-AE55-40A589ADBE6D}
trace:ole:_invoke returns 8000ffff
This is during a call to ISetupCABFile::InitializeLog in InstallShield.
I think a relay log will be necessary to identify why this call is failing.

You did not understood what I said.
OpenGL _does not_ work in 8-bit mode. So your report about crash in 8-bit is
invalid.
The other report is identical to the Bug 5526
Please do not create duplicate reports. That's the only reason why I marked this
bug a dup.

While I understand your explanations, I think the performance penalty incurred
by running Starcraft at 16 or 24 bpp is obvious enough compared to previous
versions to leave the report open. Especially that the problem is likely to
affect other 8bpp titles, some of which are also on the top 10 (ex Diablo2,
which I'd try right away if I had it).

I made a lot of progress here. I was playing TLJ through Windows remote Desktop,
and noticed it crashed due to lack of a z-buffer. I went and made a new release
of the game (Version 158, not official at this point, but you can ask me and I
may give you the binaries).
The result is a "working" TLJ. I can get into the game and play it. However, the
lack of a z-buffer causes the game's characters to flicker madly and generally
look bad. Still, a lot of progress.
