Dependency Walker also fails without mfc42.dll, which is shipped by default
with Windows 7.

MM Demo Log
If you run VideoSelector.exe from the game's directory, it complaints a few
times that it 'Failed to open default options registry key'. But after showing
up these messages VideoSelector works fine.
The problem can only be reproduced in the demo. There's no VideoSelector.exe in
the full version.
Tested with:
Windows Vista (without Wine), GeForce 9600M GS--the program works fine here
Ubuntu 13.04, GeForce 9600M GS (NVIDIA driver 313)

System Shock 2 GOG Log
You need to be completely submereged to experience this, there are not many
areas in SS2 where you can do this. The game pauses for the moment and then the
character dies. If you transfer your save file to Windows the issue is still
there, the save file is corrupted. Diving is necessary to complete SS2. I have
a GOG version of the game.
At first I thought this is just a problem with the game itself. But I noticed
that the issue affects only the users of the Mac version (Linux too?) on GOG,
which uses Wine. Check out this forum thread:
http://www.gog.com/forum/system_shock_2/system_shock_2_mac_cant_dive/page1 You
can find there corrupted save files and the ones fixed with an SS2 save files
editor.
The problem certainly needs more testing to be confirmed. The thing is, it
really takes a lot of time to find the area for diving in SS2. We can try to
use save editors to get faster to these places.
Maybe somebody could also check whether the bug occurs on Linux?
The problem can't be reproduced in the demo (there's no water).

Corrupted "W"
If you launch the Horn of the Abyss installer (a link provided), you can see
that the words "Welcome" and "Wizard" have a strange looking "W" in them. The
same issue affects the Etrom installer:
http://www.fileplanet.com/175674/download/Etrom:-The-Astral-Essence-Demo
On Linux everything looks fine. I might be wrong, but I think this is not the
first time I see corrupted fonts on OS X. Maybe someone should check font
rendering on this system?
I've attached screenshots illustrating the problem. Installing "corefonts"
doesn't help. Nothing unusual in the logs.
OS X 10.9.5

Hi Bruno, I agree; since I was the one who opened this bug, shall I abandon it?

If a new version of Wine gets installed and it gets started a window is shown
that the wine configuration gets updated which does eventually ask to download
some components. Maybe there could be an option that does not show this dialog
at all. Questions about downloading a specific component should then be maybe
handled as if the user would click "Cancel".
