Summary: Counter Strike Source: Error "failed to lock vertex
buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.48.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: gamingrullaz(a)msn.com
When trying to play Counter-Strike: Source, the menu attempts to load, and then
the system crashes with a window popping up that states "failed to lock vertex
buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"
This is on a fresh boot, so rebooting would not solve the issue.
This ONLY occurs having "-dxlevel 70" as a launch option. Dxlevel 80 makes the
game load fine.

This game demo didn't work in Window's either last time i tried. I think
there's a bug in the game.

I traced it back to the following commit between 0.9.45 and 0.9.46.
Can someone else please confirm that this commit is causing the game to
stop/crash?

wined3d: Start of some surface cleanup.
This patch and the following intend to make the surface code more
manageable and are a preparation to add gl3 support. The code adds a
new IWineD3DBaseSurface surface type, which will contain the
non-rendering management code. IWineD3DSurface and IWineGDISurface
will be derived from IWineD3DBaseSurface, and IWineGL3Surface can be
added later.

With the latest wine version, there's the invisible cursor problem too, both in
directx8 and directx9 (Gw.exe -dx8/-dx9)
mouse cursor is working after clicking twice with the right button

Hello,
i have no idea, you could try reinstalling alsa/wine, also do you have sound
emulation enabled or hardware in winecfg? Set everything in winecfg sound to
emulation. If that's not helping try running the game with aoss (aoss Gw.exe
-dsound)
Also, were you using -dsound?
Cheers

Hello,
i can acknowledge that this bug is only there when using -dx8 flag (so it seems
directx8 related) i have that bug, too. Anyway, this bug comes only sometimes
(related to the ingame locations i think) and i can play with -dx9.
If it's helpful, i can provide some logs on that behavior, or profiling/debug
informations.
Cheers

Adding keyword 1.0 to help make sure it doesn't fall
through the cracks. Please post the patch to wine-patches.

Follow up to previous comment:
I am rescinding my previous comment as I have done further testing. I only
downloaded 2 or 3 files max at the time with eMule when I first tested the
application.
I have now tested with around 8 or 9 downloads and cpu usage began to spike to
around 20% on average. It never reached so high as 40% though.
The wineserver however never had any appreciable cpu usage and stayed at <1% of
usage the entire time.
Thus I can confirm the bug with a high number of downloads. With <5 downloads
though, performance seems to be on par with the program on Windows.
