It worked, though the game cursor was offset from the real mouse position and thus a section of the screen was inaccessible by mouse, but that's for another bug report. The log seems inconclusive to my eyes. The last thing before the hang are a bunch of lines of the form fixme:typelib2:ICreateTypeInfo2_fnSetVarDocString (0x9482f30,306,L"Replaced by idWorking"), stub! fixme:typelib2:ICreateTypeInfo2_fnSetVarHelpContext (0x9482f30,0,0), stub! but those don't seem crucial, offhand.
